Teasing and backcombing, smoothing and blending!

If you’ve followed along so far, congratulations! By now, you’ve mastered clean sectioning and created curls with confidence. Today, we’re going to take those curls and add volume and texture—the secret ingredients that make hairstyles look effortless, elevated, and long-lasting.

Why Texture Matters

Hairstyles aren’t meant to be flat or stiff. It has life. It moves. It breathes. It frames the face.

And that’s exactly what we’re creating today. Texture is what gives your hair that “wow” factor without needing complicated techniques.

What You’ll Need Today

Brush
Clips or pins
Your curled hair from yesterday (or start fresh)
Light hairspray or volume powder (optional)

Today’s Challenge

Your challenge today is to create volume at the crown using:

Teasing/backcombing – gently lift hair at the roots
Smoothing – make sure it looks polished on top
Blending – the teased section should flow naturally into the rest of the hair

Start small. Lift, smooth, adjust. Notice how hair transforms instantly when you add structure and softness.

NOTE: Don’t be afraid to tease too much - it’s way harder trying to go back in there and tease again. It’s way easier to brush out too much tease!

Key Focus Points

Don’t be afraid to over-tease — tease small sections and tease right into the root to create lasting volume
Smooth over the top carefully — we want texture, not a “messy mop”
Observe how your curls respond — each curl reacts differently
